By Dennis Schmidt 8/2011

RETURN TO THE: BIBLE PAPERS HOME PAGE

This paper discusses the method used by the Apostles to baptized people. The words used in the baptism ceremony are discussed thoroughly. All scriptures are from the King James' version Bible.

INDUCTIVE COMMENTS:

THEME: Christians should be baptized into Jesus Christ to show they are disciples of Jesus.  They are to follow what baptism symbolized and what Jesus has done.

Romans 6:3-5

PURPOSE: To follow what Jesus has done, Christian’s do the same, since we are Jesus disciples.

The person pricked in his heart asked: "What shall we do?" Peter responded with: "Repent and be baptized."  The first reason to be baptized is God commanded the Christian to do it. That by itself should be enough. Jesus said:

Luke 6:46

KEY VERSE:

Colossians 2:12

WHO: God written mostly by Bible authors Luke and Paul

TO WHOM: Elected men and women Christians

WHAT: Christians should be baptized into Jesus Christ since they are disciples of Jesus.

Romans 6:3-5

WHY: To follow Jesus as His disciple

Acts 8:12

WAY: A person must believe and confess, then go into the water to be covered with the water. No where is sprinkling shown in scriptures for baptism. The word baptism, in the Greek, means to fully be covered with the substance, such as water or immersion into the water. This is to identify our burial with Christ and a resurrection from the dead.

Acts 8:35-38

The Eunuch believed with his heart & confessed that Jesus is God.

Romans 10:9

WHEREAS:

Those who have seen Jesus, have seen all the fullness of the Godhead. They saw the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost as Jesus. Yes: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are each eternal, but only one undivided God exist.

John 14:8-9

This is not oneness, but a tri-unity, since the Father and Holy Spirit are also eternally God.  There is only one God named Jesus.

WHERE: Earth

WHEN: When the Christian believes that he is crucified, dead, buried, resurrected, and made anew with Jesus Christ by being baptized. Then the fruits should follow his step of faith in being baptized. The person must make a decision to go through baptism. The person can't be a baby who would not have reason these things, but they can be a young child with an understanding of God's principles about baptism.

WHILE: Many in various churches follow only the scripture formula to be baptized in Trinity.

Matthew 28:19 "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:"

Jesus last command was stated in:

Matthew 28:19  10 days later, on Pentecost, we see the Apostles fulfilling this command.

Acts 2:37-38

I) FIRST QUESTION ASKED IS WHY BE BAPTIZED?

The person pricked in his heart asked: "What shall we do?" Peter responded with: "Repent and be baptized."  The first reason to be baptized is God commanded the Christian to do it. That by itself should be enough. Jesus said:

Luke 6:46

Another reason for baptism is found in what baptism symbolized.

Romans 6:3-6

Baptism symbolizes us being:

- Crucified with Christ Jesus: verse 6;

- Dead with Christ: verse 5;

- Buried with Christ: verse 4;

- Resurrected with Christ: verse 4;

- Newness of life with Christ: verse 4;

We can't be any or all these things with Christ Jesus unless we have been baptized into Christ.

II) THE SECOND QUESTION ASKED IS WHO IS TO BE BAPTIZED?

The example, in scriptures, of believers being baptized are those who ask the question: "What shall I do?" A person not pricked in his heart would not be blessed by God in his baptism even if he goes through the ceremony.

Romans 14:23

Hebrews 11:6

2 Corinthians 5:7

We must believe that we are crucified, dead, buried, resurrected, and made anew with Jesus Christ by being baptized. Then the fruits should follow our step of faith in being baptized. The person must make a decision to go through baptism. The person can't be a baby who would not have reason these things, but they can be a young child with an understanding of God's principles about baptism.

III) THE THIRD QUESTION ASKED IS HOW DO WE GET BAPTIZED?

Acts 8:35-38

The Eunuch believed with his heart & confessed that Jesus is God.

Romans 10:9

A person must believe and confess, then go into the water to be covered with the water. No where is sprinkling shown in baptism. The word baptism, in the Greek, means to fully be covered with the substance, such as water or immersion into the water. This is to identify our burial with Christ and a resurrection from the dead.

Colossians 2:12

IV) THE FOURTH QUESTION ASKED IS INTO WHO ARE WE BAPTIZED?

A number of scriptures are presented to prove one must be baptized into the Lord Jesus Christ.  Also discussed is the only reference to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

A) WHO DIED?

Romans 6:3

This scripture shows the reason to be baptized. The word of God clearly says to be baptized into Jesus Christ, the person who died. The Father and Holy Ghost did not die. We are baptized to symbolize a death like Jesus' death and a resurrection like Jesus' resurrection. The Father and Holy Ghost were not resurrected.

B) SCRIPTURE EXAMPLES OF BAPTISM INTO JESUS.

Acts 10:46-48

When the Apostles baptized, they always did it into Jesus, since:

Acts 2:36

Acts 8:12

Samaritan, gentiles, men, and women also were baptized into Jesus:

Acts 8:16

In 8:12 name of Jesus Christ and same group in 8:16 name of the Lord Jesus. Acts 2:36 makes the two interchangeable statements.

Acts 19:4-5

Even Paul, who was not with Jesus when the Apostles received the command to baptize, baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.  Paul was taught by Jesus who to baptize into.

Galatians 1:11-12

Galatians 3:26-27

C) BAPTISM INTO PAUL.

1 Corinthians 1:12-13

1 Corinthians 1:15

The same question is asked of us. Was the Father or Holy Spirit crucified? Then why be baptized into Father, Son, & Holy Spirit?

We should be baptized into Jesus who was crucified and we follow.

D) HOW DO I RECONCILE MATT 28:19 - FATHER, SON, AND HOLY SPIRIT?

Hebrews 1:2

Colossians 1:19 What Fulness?

Colossians 2:9 Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, One God, in Jesus.

Those who seen Jesus, seen all the fulness of the Godhead. They saw the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost as Jesus. Yes: the Father, Son, & Holy Spirit are each eternal, but only one undivided God exist.

John 14:8-9

This is not oneness, but a Triunity, since the Father and Holy Spirit are also eternally God.  There is only one God named Jesus.

Exodus 23:20-21

The angel was Jesus.  Only God can pardon sins. His name is Jesus.

John 17:11 (NIV)

Isaiah 9:6

Jesus is not the everlasting Father or counsellor-the Holy Spirit, but his name shall be called them.  Therefore, to baptize in the name of Jesus is to baptize into who Jesus is called.

E) DO ALL IN THE NAME OF JESUS.

Colossians 3:17 Baptism into Jesus is one of those deeds.

Romans 10:13

Acts 3:6  Healing is in the Jesus name. If Peter said, God heal you, the man would have remained lame.

Acts 16:18

To cast out demons it is done in the name of Jesus. If everything else is done in Jesus name, why not baptism.

V) THE FIFTH QUESTION ASKED IS WHAT SHALL I DO?

The same question was asked of Peter in Acts 2:37. The Christian has only one answer. I must be obedient to my Lord. Every step of your Christian growth will require a further departing from your old life and separation from the world. You may be persecuted, because your commitment is to the word of God & not traditions.

Acts 2:37

2 Corinthians 6:17

VI) CONCLUSION

I have answered a number of questions a new believer would ask about baptism. I have put another separation for the believer who is following the word of God as his only guide for his Christian walk. I pray that you would ask God for wisdom and understanding on just who Jesus is. Then God will provide the answer to the question of baptism in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit is to be baptize into the Lord Jesus Christ.

Acts 17:11
