OVERVIEW OF NAMES OF GOD

This paper discusses the names (titles) of God, their meanings, and applications. The meaning of each name shows an attribute or characteristic of God's essence. All scriptures are from the King James' version Bible, unless otherwise stated.

INDUCTIVE COMMENTS:

THEME: Logos = Word. It emphasizes concept of thought, conception, expression or utterance.

John 1:18

PURPOSE: Each name reveals more of the characteristics of the Godhead.

Isaiah 9:6  Jesus is the fullness of the Godhead Himself.

KEY VERSE: Jesus has names for the Father (Mighty God and Everlasting Father) and Holy Spirit (Counsellor) and LORD - Savior/Healer - Messiah/Anointed one:

Isaiah 7:14  Virgin=Mary; Son=Jesus; Immanuel=God with us.

Acts 2:36   Jesus is both LORD and Christ.

WHO: God mainly by Bible authors Moses, David, Matthew, Luke, John, and Paul

TO WHOM: Elected Christians

WHY: God wants His elected believers to know Him as the LORD our Righteousness.

WHERE: God is everywhere at the same time.  God is one omni-present Godhead.

WHEN: Forever as God always existed and will exist forever.

WHILE: The Father and Jesus have the same name.

II) THE NAME JESUS:

The name is from the Hebrew name Y'hoshua (Y'- Yah: the Lord; and shun: to be freed, salvation, aid, deliverance) making the Greek name Joshua. The name means the Lord will save, the Lord of salvation or the Lord the savior. Others had the name Jesus.

God say His name is: I AM THAT I AM.It also emphasizes God as a covernant keeper. El Shaddai shows God as coverant maker. The O.T. uses this form 6828 times.

Jehovah - Adon:  Singular form. LORD of lord. To judge or rule. It's meanings include that of master of owner as well as lord. The O.T. uses this form 334 times.

Nehemiah 10:29

Jehovah - Adonai: Plural form. LORD of Lords. To judge or rule as Sovereign LORD. It's meaning include that of master or owner as well as lord. The O.T. uses this form 439 times. It emphasizes God as almighty ruler with everything subject to him and man as his servant. The emphasis is also on God as covenant keeper & his power.

Psalms 109:21  

YHVH LORD: used with Adonai Lord in the same verse: Exodus 4:10

Jehovah - El: Singular form - LORD God. The O.T. uses this form some 250 times.

Psalms 31:5  

Jehovah - Elohim: Uni-Plural form (3 in 1) - LORD Gods; Strong or mighty and object of fear. The O.T. uses this form over 2700 times. The compound emphasizes God as: creator, govening man, authority over man, and redeeming man. Also God's direct connection with the nation of Israel.

Genesis 2:4

Numbers 23:22  Showing God's strength.

Jehovah - Elyon: The LORD most high.

Psalms 7:17

Jehovah - Jireh: The LORD will Provide (means of deliverance).

Genesis 22:13-14  Principal of Jireh is fulfilled in the New Testament for any need

Jehovah - Makeh: The LORD smites. God punishes sin.

Ezekiel 7:9

Jehovah - Mekaddishkem: The LORD our sanctifer. God set's apart.

EL - Elyon: Most high God. The root of the word is to be elevated. It emphesizes God as the exalted one & his sovereignty.

El - Gmulot: The God of recompense. It emphasizes God as one that avenges.

Jeremiah 51:56

El - Olam: Everlasting God. Olam means age or hidden. It emphasizes God of eternity or of the ages. God controls time.

Isaiah 40:28

El - Roi: The God of sight. It emphasizes God as one who keeps watch.

Genesis 16:13  

El - Shaddai: God Almighty. Their are two roots for the word: first is to be powerful and second is breast or nourisher and sustainer.  The Old Testament uses this form 48 times.

Genesis 17:1

Kurios:  Lord. It emphasizes mighty one and powerful one. The New Testament uses this form over 650 times.

Logos: Word. It emphasizes concept of thought, conception, expression or utterance.

Hupsistos: The highest. It emphasizes God in highest heaven.

Hebrews 7:1

Pantokrator: The almighty. It emphasizes the all powerful God.
