SANCTIFICATION → HOLINESS

RETURN TO THE: BIBLE PAPERS HOME PAGE

This paper discusses the sanctification process that a Christian should go through in his life with God. Sanctify means to set apart, consecrate, dedicate, and separate with a derived meaning to be holy and pure. The sanctification process starts with God predestines the Christian to be His child or son of God. Then God sanctifies the Christian or sets him apart for His purpose. This is followed with the Christian being made holy with the Christian going on to the perfection. The final step for the Christian is to be made in the image of Christ as he becomes god-like with the divine nature maturing in him. All scriptures are from the King James' version Bible.

Sanctification process: God predestines the Christian to be His child or son of God → God sanctifies the Christian or sets him apart for His purpose → Christian being made holy → Christian going on to the perfection → Christian is to be made in the image of Christ as he becomes god-like → Christian being made in the divine nature as he matures

INDUCTIVE COMMENTS:

Tempted -> Man's Lust -> Enticed -> Lust conceived -> Sin -> Finished -> Death

James 1:13-15 "Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: {14} But every man is tempted, (->) when he is drawn away of his own lust, (->) and enticed. (->) {15} Then when lust hath conceived, (->) it bringeth forth sin: and sin, (->) when it is finished, (->) bringeth forth death."

CONCLUSION: Series towards Christian growth of maturity or death are to measure, test, maturity and prove ones real faith.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-4 "For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: {4} That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;" (Sanctified life results in Christian)

IIIA) SANCTIFICATION: See also HOLY & PERFECTION Pure, consecrated, blameless, sacred, saint, hallow

Also see my paper: Walk As Jesus Walked for more information on this subject.

Also see my paper: Christian Growth for more information on this subject.

1 Chronicles 15:12 "And said unto them, Ye are the chief of the fathers of the Levites: sanctify yourselves, both ye and your brethren, that ye may bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel unto the place that I have prepared for it." H6942

- Make yourself clean, pure, and consecrated to do service unto the Lord.

G37. hagiazo, hag-ee-ad'-zo; from G40; to make holy, i.e. (cer.) purify or consecrate; (mentally) to venerate:--hallow, be holy, sanctify.

John 17:16-19 "They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. {17} Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. {18} As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. {19} And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth." G37

- The Christian is a saint or set aside for God's purpose. The Holy Spirit guides us into all truth.

IIIB) BEFORE SALVATION – OLD NATURE: Christians do not have two natures

Ephesians 2:1-3 "And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; {2} Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: {3} Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others."

IIIC) AFTER SALVATION – THE CHRISTIAN IS SANCTIFIED OR SET APART WITH A NEW NATURE: Christians have only one nature

2 Corinthians 5:17-19 "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. {18} And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; {19} To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation."

Ephesians 2:4-5 "But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, {5} Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)"

IIID) THREE VIEWS OF SANCTIFICATION:

1) Baptismal Regeneration/sanctification {Lutherans and Roman Catholics) is a false view that baptism washes away original sins of infants depravity of the human nature.

2) Progressive sanctification (some Protestants) is a false view that begins at conversion. Past tense is by the blood of Jesus Christ; Present tense is by the Word of God (Bible); and Future tense is by the return of Jesus when they will be perfected.

3) Sanctification by the literal meaning Biblical view which is the Christian is set apart unto God to be different from the world free from sin (Romans 6:17-19); new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17-19); and ceased from sin (1 Peter 4:1). Sanctified is what the believer is; perfected is what the Christian is to become.

Romans 6:17-19 "But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. {18} Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. {19} I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness."

1 Peter 2:24 "Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed."

IIIE) HOLY SPIRIT IS ONE WHO SANCTIFIES AND SETS APART THOSE UNTO HIS SERVICE IN GOD'S KINGDOM:

Romans 15:16 "That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost."

1 Corinthians 6:11 "And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God."

2 Thessalonians 2:13-14 "But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: {14} Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ." (God made the Christian sanctified)

1 Peter 1:2 "Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied."

IIIF) BIBLICAL SANCTIFICATION IS ALWAYS IN THE PAST TENSE AS BEING COMPLETED:

Acts 20:32 "And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified."

Acts 26:18 "To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me." (Sanctified life results in Christian)

Romans 15:16 "That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost."

1 Corinthians 1:2 "Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:"

1 Corinthians 6:11 "And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God."

2 Timothy 2:21 "If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work."

Hebrews 10:10 "By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." (Christ's death sanctified Christian's life)

Hebrews 10:14 "For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified."

Hebrews 10:29 "Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?" (Christ's death sanctified Christian's life)

Jude 1:1 "Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:"

IV) HOLINESS:

1 Thessalonians 3:12-13 "And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you: {13} To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints."

1 Peter 1:15-16 "But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy."

Old Testament uses of Sanctify include to set apart Levities and priests for God's service, the alter was set apart for God's service, and the nation of Israel.

VC) BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF PERFECTION:

Job: Job 1:8 "And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?"

Noah: Genesis 6:9 "These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God."

Enoah: Genesis 5:24 "And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him."

Hebrews 11:5 "By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God."

Moses: Numbers 12:6-8 "And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. {7} My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house. {8} With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?"

Some do walk in perfection even though they are sanctified; others live in perfection of holiness in their sanctification:

Galatians 5:22-25 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, {23} Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. {24} And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. {25} If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit."

Ephesians 1:3-4 "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: {4} According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:"

2 Timothy 3:16-17 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: {17} That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works."

Titus 2:11-12 "For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, {12} Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;"

VI) CHRISTIAN BELIVERS ARE MADE IN THE IMAGE OF JESUS:

Romans 8:29 "For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren."

1 Corinthians 15:49 "And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly."

2 Corinthians 3:18 "But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord."

Colossians 1:15 "Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:"

1 John 3:2 "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is."

VII) CHRISTIAN BELIVERS ARE GIVEN A DIVINE NATURE:

John 14:20 "At that day ye shall know that I <am> in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you." As Christ is in Father, we are in Him.

John 17:22-23 "And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: {23} I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me." We are perfected in one with the Father & Jesus.

The Christian is one with Christ as Church.

Hebrews 2:10-11 "For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. {11} For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,"

2 Peter 1:3-4 "According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: {4} Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust."

1 John 3:2 "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is."
