This paper discusses the many baptisms found in the scriptures. The Bible refers to several baptisms: such as being baptized into Moses, Paul, John, Apollos, Jesus (Christ, body and Lord), and Holy Ghost (Spirit) baptisms. The Bible also refers to a baptism of fire and suffering. It also alludes to a baptism for dead people. Webster's defines baptism to be an admittance, initiation, identification, experience, trial or test. All scriptures are taken from the King James' version Bible.
INDUCTIVE COMMENTS:
THEME: Christians should be baptized into Jesus Christ to show they are disciples of Jesus. They are to follow what baptism symbolized and what Jesus has done.
Romans 6:3-5 "Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? {4} Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. {5} For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:"
PURPOSE: To follow what Jesus has done, Christian’s are to do the same, since we are Jesus disciples.
The person pricked in his heart asked: "What shall we do?" Peter responded with: "Repent and be baptized." The first reason to be baptized is God commanded the Christian to do it. That by itself should be enough. Jesus said:
Luke 6:46 "And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?"
KEY VERSES:
Matthew 3:11 "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and <with> fire:" John’s baptism of repentance
Colossians 2:12 "Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead." Baptism into Jesus
WHO: God written mostly by Bible authors Matthew, Luke, and Paul
TO WHOM: Elected Christians
WHAT: Baptism is an admittance, initiation, identification, experience, trial or test.
Acts 1:4-8 "And, being assembled together with <them>, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, <saith he>, ye have heard of me. {5} For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. {6} When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? {7} And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. {8} But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."
WHY: To follow Jesus or others as their disciples.
1 Corinthians 1:12-13 "Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. {13} Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?"
Some Christians were following: Peter, Paul, Apollos or Jesus doctrines. A man was baptized into that person, they followed, to show that he was a disciple of that person's teachings.
WAY: A person follows the teachings of who they are baptized into. The word baptism, in the Greek, means to fully be covered with the substance, such as water or immersion into the water. In the case of Christian baptism, this is to identify with Christ in His death, burial, resurrection from the dead, and unto a new life. To be baptized into the Holy Spirit is to have the Spirit fill the Christian.
Acts 8:35-38 "Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. {36} And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? {37} And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. {38} And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him."
WHERE: Earth
WHEN: When the Christian believes that he is crucified, dead, buried, resurrected, and made anew with Jesus Christ by being baptized. Then the fruits should follow his step of faith in being baptized. The person makes a decision to go through baptism after understanding the doctrine.
Acts 2:38 "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."
Acts 8:12 "But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women." Baptism into Jesus
WHILE: Different baptisms come at various times in a Christian’s growth. Repentance>into Jesus>Holy Spirit for power in ministry>fire
Matthew 3:11 "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and <with> fire:"

I) ONE OR SEVERAL BAPTISMS, WHAT DOES THE BIBLE TEACH:
Hebrews 6:2 "Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment."
Ephesians 4:5 "One Lord, one faith, one baptism,"
Hebrews 6:2 says baptisms and Ephesians 4:5 one baptism. Which is correct or are both correct? God considers baptism to be a very important doctrines or teachings to be understood. God sent a forerunner before Jesus, John the Baptist, who baptized for repentance and stated Jesus would baptize with fire and the Holy Ghost.
Matthew 21:25 "The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?"
Jesus asked this question. Today, a similar question about the many baptisms needs to be answered by each Christian.
Matthew 28:19 "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:"
Jesus last command from Matthew 28:19 was to teach and baptize.
II) BAPTISM OF REPENTANCE (JOHN'S BAPTISM): 1ST REPENTANCE THEN FAITH:
John's baptism was an identification of repentance which is a turning away from sins unto righteousness. He also preach that the people should look forward to a person mighty than John, the Messiah (Jesus), who would baptize them with Holy Ghost and fire.
Matthew 3:6 "And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins."
Matthew 3:11 "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and <with> fire:"
John 1:25-26 "And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? {26} John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;"

III) BAPTISM REQUIRED IMMERSION INTO AND UNDER THE WATER:
To baptize means to be immersed into or covered over with a substance. The person would go under the water to identify with a death and burial followed by a resurrected from the dead to a new life. This required a complete washing not just a sprinkling.
Mark 1:4-5 "John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. {5} And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins."
John 3:23 "And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized."
Acts 8:36 "And as they went on <their> way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, <here is> water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?"
Acts 8:38 "And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him."
IV) JESUS OWN BAPTISM: OUR EXAMPLE TO FOLLOW:
The Bible stated in Genesis 2:17: "... for in the day that thou" sins "thou shalt surely die." Jesus had to fullfilled all of God's law requirements. Jesus baptism, as man's substitute, vindicates the justice of the law that requires the sinner's death. Everything Jesus did was pleasing to God as he was lead by the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 3:13-17,4:1 "Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. {14} But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? {15} And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer <it to be so> now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. {16} And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: {17} And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. {4:1} Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil
V) JESUS DISCIPLES BAPTIZED: OUR MINISTRY ALSO:
John 3:22 "After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized."
John 3:26 "And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all <men> come to him."
John 4:1-2 "When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, {2} (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)"
A) BAPTISM INTO CHRIST AND HIS BODY: THE SINGLE BAPTISM INTO THE CHURCH:
Romans 6:1-14 shows what baptism into Jesus Christ represents.
Romans 6:3-4 "Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? {4} Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life."
Colossians 2:12 "Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with <him> through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead."
See my paper: "One-In-Christ" CHRISTIAN'S RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD IS IN CHRIST for more information on this subject.
B) BAPTIZED INTO WHOM: UNMISTAKABLE VISIBLE DISCIPLE OF JESUS:
1 Corinthians 1:12-13 "Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. {13} Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?"
Some Christians were following: Peter, Paul, Apollos or Jesus doctrines. A man was baptized into the person, they followed, to show that he was a disciple of that person's teachings.
1 Corinthians 10:2 "And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;"
1 Corinthians 12:13 "For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether <we be> Jews or Gentiles, whether <we be> bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit."
Ephesians 4:5 "One Lord, one faith, one baptism,"
Together, these two scriptures show that Christians are one in Jesus. Baptism is a visible method of showing this relationship.
See my paper: "Apostles Baptism" UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF WATER BAPTISM AND THE CORRECT METHOD for more information on this subject.
VI) BAPTISM INTO JESUS NOT INTO THE FATHER, THE SON, AND THE HOLY GHOST:
The Father and Holy Spirit did not die. Only Jesus died. Baptism into Jesus is an initiation into Jesus death and resurrection.
Acts 2:38; 8:12; 8:16; 10:48; & 19:5; Romans 6:3; & Galatians 3:27 all state baptism into Jesus/Lord/Christ not Father/Son/Spirit.
Acts 8:12 "But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women."
Galatians 3:27 "For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ."
See my paper: "Triunity: Father, Son, & Holy Spirit" GOD IS A QUALITATIVE ONE TRIUNITY NOT TRIUNE: THREE SEPARATE PERSONS. for more information on this subject.
See my paper: "Just Who Is God" GOD CAN NOT BE DIVIDED. GOD IS A QUALITATIVE ONE TRIUNITY NOT THREE SEPARATE PERSONS. for more information on this subject.
See my paper: "The One God - The Shama" THE KEY BIBLE SCRIPTURE FOR ONE GOD IS DEUTERONOMY 6:4. THE WORD FOR GOD IS A PLURALITY, & THE WORD FOR ONE IS A COMPOUND UNITY. THIS IS THE CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE FOR GOD WHO IS A TRIUNITY PLURALITY ONE UNITY. for more information on this subject.
See my paper: "Godhead Relationship" HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH EACH MANIFESTATION OF THE GODHEAD FOR FULFILLMENT, NOT ONLY JESUS. for more information on this subject.
VII) BAPTISM IS NOT A WORK WHICH CAN SAVE A PERSON:
Baptism does not save a person, but a good conscience towards God, believing in Jesus and calling upon the Lord does save a person.
Mark 16:16 "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned."
Acts 2:38 "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."
Acts 2:41 "Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added <unto them> about three thousand souls."
Acts 22:16 "And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord."
1 Peter 3:21 "The like figure whereunto <even> baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:"
See my paper: "Baptism for Forgiveness of Sins" BAPTISM IS NOT NEEDED FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS for more information on this subject.
VIII) BAPTISM FOR THE DEAD: A FALSE MEANS OF BEING SAVED:
1 Corinthians 15:29 "Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?"
Due to persecution with many Christians dying, before they were baptized, some in error baptized another for the dead Christian.
IX) BAPTISM OF HOLY GHOST: GOD'S POWER TO COMPLETE HIS TASKS:
Holy Spirit baptism is needed for power to witness and heal people.
Acts 10:47-48 "Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? {48} And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days."
See my paper: "Holy Spirit Baptism" HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM BENEFITS ARE SHOWN. THE STEPS TO RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM ARE SHOWN for more information on this subject.
See my paper: "Is the Baptism of Holy Spirit with the Evidence of Tongues of God or the Devil?" THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN SCRIPTURE INCLUDES TONGUES WHICH ARE FOREIGN LANGUAGES TO COMMUNICATE WITH GOD IN PRAYER for more information on this subject.
X) BAPTISM OF FIRE: A CROSS AND SEPARATION FROM THE WORLD:
Matthew 10:37-38 "He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. {38} And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me."
Luke 3:16 "John answered, saying unto <them> all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:"
Luke 12:49-53 "I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? {50} "But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! {51} Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: {52} For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. {53} The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law."
XI) BAPTISM OF SUFFERING: PERSECUTION, LOSE OF JOBS & LOSE OF FAMILY:
Mark 10:38-39 "But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? {39} And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:"
2 Corinthians 1:5 "For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ."
Colossians 1:24 "Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church:"
XII) EVEN AFTER JESUS ASCENSION SOME BELIEVER'S HAD ONLY JOHN'S BAPTISM:
Acts 18:25 "This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John."
Acts 19:3-5 "And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. {4} Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. {5} When they heard <this>, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus."
God wants us to be open to his word and correct our baptism errors. We should follow his examples as Jesus disciples and walk his walk.
