This paper discusses the book of Habakkuk. Habakkuk was in Judah and discusses Judah's sin. Another prophet of the same time is Jeremiah. Habakkuk is the only book that is a conversation between God and the prophet. The king of Judah, Jehoiakim, was doing evil. He was ambitious, cruel and corrupt. A complete commentary of chapters 1 & 2 was found among the dead Sea Scrolls showing the important of this book. All scriptures are from the King James' version Bible.

{Habakkuk 1:5 } "Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you." Fulfilled in Holy Spirit baptism in Acts with healing miricles.

{Habakkuk 3:19} "The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments." Fulfilled in millennium / restore Israel (Land of Jews) in 1948 and to God's kingdom eternal state in security.

I) INTRODUCTION: {HABAKKUK 1:1}

Burden which Habakkuk: Habakkuk means he that embraces or wrestling with God. No other Biblical reference is found. Habakkuk had a burden for God to correct Judah and for God's own holiness.

Prophet did see: Also vision in 2:3

Prophet: A spokesman for another, as for God. Other names/titles in the Bible are as follows: Man of God; Servant of the Lord; Messenger of the Lord; and Seer (to see). Only 4 prophets claimed or called themselves prophets. Habakkuk here in 1:1 and also in 3:1; Haggai 5 times in 1:1-3, 1:12, 2:1, & 2:10; Isaiah 3 times in 37:2, 38:1 & 39:3; and Jeremiah 31 times among them 20:2 & 25:2. God also ordained Jeremiah a prophet in Jeremiah 1:5 and he is called one in Daniel 9:2. Elijah is called a prophet in Malachi 4:5. The other prophets by shown to be prophets by their predictions being completed of other names or such words as visions.

1 Samuel 9:9 "(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for <he that is> now <called> a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)"

John 15:15 "Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you."

1 Corinthians 12:28 "And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healing, helps, governments, diversities of tongues."

Prophet would meet the following:

- Spoke only in the name of the Lord (Yahweh).

- God had a special calling for him to by a prophet.

- His life matches his position. He did not practice divination.

- Do not assume signs and wonders prove his position.

- His God given prophecies came to pass.

Deuteronomy 13:1-3 "If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, {2} And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; {3} Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul."

2 Thessalonians 2:9 "<Even him>, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,"

- His message was in harmony with previous revelation. History will confirms his authenticity.

Deuteronomy 18:21-22 "And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? {22} When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that <is> the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, <but> the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him."

- Moral quality and spiritual essence of the message.

- Inner witness to the Holy Spirit believer.

- Test the prophets revelation against what the Bible states.

1 Corinthians 14:29 "Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge."

Holy Scriptures:

God's word is above that of His name:

Psalms 138:2 "I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name." God's words is most important.

Word of God is Jesus (God's name) who is in every Scriptures:

Isaiah 55:11 "So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it." The Bible, scriptures, are God's words.

Psalms 40:7 "Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book <it is> written of me," (fulfilled see Hebrews 10:7) The Bible is centered on Jesus (God) before & after He is manifested in flesh.

John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Jesus is God & the Word of God.

1st cry = help; 2nd cry = shout/scream intense cry for help.

PROPHET: O Lord, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! The prophet sees the evil and wonders why God does not punish them.

Righteous: Character of being right, just, holy, clean & pure. God conforms to a moral proper standard or norm. To miss the norm is to sin. Jesus alone was perfect. He is the rock.

I will work in your days, Ye would not believe: Judah/prophet could not understand God giving them over to arrogant Babylonians. Similarly, Acts says, God would punish Jews for not receiving Jesus

I raise up the Chaldeans..bitter, hasty, terrible & dreadful nation: God raised up these forces to punish Judah for her sins. Babylon did it as a natural characteristic. God used them for his purpose then punished them for their sin.

Holy One..thou art of pure eyes than to behold evil: Babylon = evil; Prophet questions God approving the wicked deeds of Babylon.

Thou hast established them for correction:

PROPHET: The man (Judah) is more righteous than he (Chaldean's)

(1) Write the vision, and make <it> plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it {Habakkuk 2:2}

(2) For the vision <is> yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry {Habakkuk 2:3}

(3) Behold, his soul <which> is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith. {Habakkuk 2:4}

Just: How can a righteous, holy God forgive sinners and accept them as if they never sinned? God performed a legal and formal acquittal from guilt to the believer. He declared us to be righteous by imputation.

Imputed: God reckon to us, account us, & attributed to us His righteous. It does not imply a transfer of moral qualities but credits us with Jesus righteous as our innocent substitute. Jesus fulfilled the law & His payment of our debt was reckon to us.

Faith: Faith is not the same as hope. Hope is wishing for something. Faith is having it in a faith dimension. When God reveals (manifests) it to this dimension is up to Him. We are to believe, when we pray, that the answer has already occurred. Future prayers are thanksgiving & praise for God's gift we already have in faith.

The just shall live by his faith: The correct Hebrew is: "The righteous man shall live by his faithfulness"

The law shows sin. The faithful man is imputed righteous.

Nebuchadnezzar died and his evil son was king 2 years (2Kings 25:27); next king 4 years followed by a king for 1 year. Belshaztar (Daniel 5) was also killed after sinning against God.
