This paper discusses the book of Nahum. Another prophet against Nineveh of the time was Zephaniah (Zephaniah 2:13-15), and the king of Judah was Manasseh. Nahum was written to Judah for comfort and Nineveh for punishment. All scriptures are from the King James' version Bible.

WHO: Nahum

Nahum 1:1 "The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite."

Burden or oracles: Nahum's burden is against the people of Nineveh.

Nineveh: Means habitation of Ninus. Possible the oldest city of the world established by Nimrod.

Genesis 10:11 "Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah,"

Book of the vision of:

Numbers 12:6 "And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, <I> the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, <and> will speak unto him in a dream."

Nahum: Means consolation, compassion, or full of comfort. No other Biblical reference to this name is found (Luke 3:25 maybe).

Elkoshite: Could be Elkoshi. The location is unknown. A possible location could be the city of Capernaum which means city of Nahum.

Prophet: A spokesman for another, as for God. Other names/titles in the Bible are as follows: Man of God; Servant of the Lord; Messenger of the Lord; and Seer (to see).

Prophet would meet the following:

- Spoke only in the name of the Lord (Yahweh).

- God had a special calling for him to by a prophet.

- His life matches his position. He did not practice divination.

- Do not assume signs and wonders prove his position.

- His God given prophecies came to pass.

Deuteronomy 13:1-3 "If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, {2} And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; {3} Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul."

2 Thessalonians 2:9 "<Even him>, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,"

- His message was in harmony with previous revelation. History will confirms his authenticity.

Deuteronomy 18:21-22 "And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? {22} When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that <is> the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, <but> the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him."

- Moral quality and spiritual essence of the message.

- Inner witness to the Holy Spirit believer.

- Test the prophets revelation against what the Bible states.

1 Corinthians 14:29 "Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge."

Holy Scriptures:

God's word is above that of His name:

Psalms 138:2 "I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name." God's words is most important.

Word of God is Jesus (God's name) who is in every Scriptures:

Isaiah 55:11 "So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it." The Bible, scriptures, are God's words.

Psalms 40:7 "Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book <it is> written of me," (fulfilled see Hebrews 10:7) The Bible is centered on Jesus (God) before & after He is manifested in flesh.

John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Jesus is God & the Word of God.

The three main feasts are underlined with the four others added within the main feasts: Passover, Unleaven Bread, Firstfruits; Pentecost (Feast of Weeks ending with Pentecost); & Tabernacles starting with Trumpets (Rosh Hashanah or Regathering), Day of Atonement, and Succoth or Tabernacles. For each of the three main feasts all men were to go to Jerusalem. There are several other feast days: New moons (every thirty days), Sabbath days (every seven days), and year of Jubilee (every fifty year) are other rest days. Each is a type of Christian experience or future event.

Perform thy vows:

Matthew 5:36-37 "Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. {37} But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil." Do not make a vow unless it is important.

Paul and other Jews, as christians, keep vows.

Colossians 2:16-17 "Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath <days>: {17} Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body <is> of Christ." Christians are not under laws or rules but principles. Gentile christians have been taught, in their churches, from a gentile perspective about the Bible. The feasts have a present and future relationship with the gentile christian.

III) NIVEVEH DESTRUCTION DESCRIBED: {NAHUM 2:1 – 2:13}

A) DESCRIPTION OF SIEGE OF NIVEVEH: {NAHUM 2:1 – 2:10}

WHY: He that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face

Nahum 2:1 "/\ He /\ that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face: keep the munition, watch the way, make <thy> loins strong, fortify <thy> power mightily."

WHAT: For the LORD hath turned away the excellency of Jacob, as the excellency of Israel

Nahum 2:2 "For the /\ LORD /\ hath turned away the excellency of Jacob, as the excellency of Israel: for the emptiers have emptied them out, and marred their vine branches."

Nahum 2:3 "The shield of /\ his /\ mighty men is made red, the valiant men <are> in scarlet: the chariots <shall be> with flaming torches in the day of /\ his /\ preparation, and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken." Red for blood and death.

Nahum 2:4 "The chariots shall rage in the streets, they shall justle one against another in the broad ways: they shall seem like torches, they shall run like the lightnings."

Chariots rage in the streets..justle one another..run like lighten: Sound very similar to the cars today.

Nahum 2:5 "He shall recount his worthies: they shall stumble in their walk; they shall make haste to the wall thereof, and the defence shall be prepared."

Nahum 2:6 "The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be dissolved."

Nahum 2:7 "And Huzzab shall be led away captive, she shall be brought up, and her maids shall lead <her> as with the voice of doves, tabering upon their breasts."

Nahum 2:8 "But Nineveh <is> of old like a pool of water: yet they shall flee away. Stand, stand, <shall they cry>; but none shall look back."

Nahum 2:9 "Take ye the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold: for <there is> none end of the store <and> { glory } out of all the pleasant furniture."

Nahum 2:10 "She is empty, and void, and waste: and the heart melteth, and the knees smite together, and much pain <is> in all loins, and the faces of them all gather blackness."

B) NIVEVEH’S DESTRUCTION CONTRASTED WITH HER FORMER GLORY: {NAHUM 2:11 – 2:13}

Nahum 2:12 "The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with ravin."

WHAT: I <am> against thee, saith the LORD of hosts

I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts: The very worst enemy to have is God.

Nahum 3:7 "And it shall come to pass, <that> all they that look upon thee shall flee from thee, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee?"

Nahum 3:8 "Art thou better than populous No, that was situate among the rivers, <that had> the waters round about it, whose rampart <was> the sea, <and> her wall <was> from the sea?"

Nahum 3:9 "Ethiopia and Egypt <were> her strength, and <it was> infinite; Put and Lubim were thy helpers."

Ethiopia: Means heat or burning. Egypt: Means depression land.

Nahum 3:10 "Yet <was> she carried away, she went into captivity: her young children also were dashed in pieces at the top of all the streets: and they cast lots for her honourable men, and all her great men were bound in chains."

WHY: Thou also shalt be drunken

Nahum 3:11 "Thou also shalt be drunken: thou shalt be hid, thou also shalt seek strength because of the enemy."

Nahum 3:12 "All thy strong holds <shall be like> fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater."

Nahum 3:13 "Behold, thy people in the midst of thee <are> women: the gates of thy land shall be set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire shall devour thy bars."

Nahum 3:14 "Draw thee waters for the siege, fortify thy strong holds: go into clay, and tread the mortar, make strong the brickkiln."

WAY: There shall the fire devour thee; the sword shall cut thee off

Nahum 3:18 "Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: thy nobles shall dwell <in the dust>: thy people is scattered upon the mountains, and no man gathereth <them>."

The Nineveh people are getting back what they did to other peoples.
