This paper discusses why the righteous suffer. The details are discussed from the life of Job in his book - Job. A more basic question is the problem of evil in God's universe. James 5:11 "Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy." Patience=endure

II) JOB HAS SEVERAL OTHER RELATED THEOLOGY TOPICS BESIDES SUFFERING:

III) SATAN EXISTS AND WHAT HE DOES: He is the tempter (Eve: Genesis 3:1) and liar (Father of liars: John 8:44). God allow Satan to do evil.

Job 1:6-7 "Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. {7} And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it."  (Doing evil). Also see Job 2:1

V) IS THERE LIFE AFTER DEATH?: Job, in 2000 BC, answers there is life after death.

Job 19:26-27 "And <though> after my skin <worms> destroy this <body>, yet in my flesh shall I see God: {27} Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; <though> my reins be consumed within me."

VI) CAN A MAN BE PERFECT, UPRIGHT & RIGHTEOUS?:  God says Job was perfect or mature in faith.

Job 1:1 "There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name <was> Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil."

Job 1:5 "And it was so, when the days of <their> feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings <according> to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually."

Job 1:8 "And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that <there is> none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?"

Job 2:3 "And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that <there is> none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause." Even after loosing all.

VII) GOD'S PROTECTION: Psalms 34:7 - Hedge around us also.  Ezekiel 22:30 - We are to be hedge around others also.

Job 1:10 "Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land."

Job 2:6 "And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he <is> in thine hand; but save his life." See also Job 1:12. God controls Satan.

Job 42:2 "I know that thou canst do every <thing>, and <that> no thought can be withholden from thee." God controls & knows all.

VIII) ONE OF GOD CHARACTERISTICS: He boost of our faith to Satan.

Job 1:8 "And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that <there is> none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?"

Job 2:4-6 "And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. {5} But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. {6} And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he <is> in thine hand; but save his life."

IX) JOB A FAITHFUL MAN: Through all our trials, our confession also should bless the name of God - Jesus.  He lives & is our Lord.

Job 1:21-22 "And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. {22} In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly."

Job 19:25 "For I know <that> my redeemer liveth, and <that> he shall stand at the latter <day> upon the earth:"

See my paper: "Faith" FAITH PROMISES PRESENTED FOR EVERY ASPECT OF THE CHRISTIANS LIFE: SALVATION & HEALING. THE CONDITIONS. for more information on this subject.

X) POSSIBLY JOB'S SIN: Fear robs us of faith & God's blessings.

Job 3:25 "For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me."

Romans 14:23 "And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because <he eateth> not of faith: for whatsoever <is> not of faith is sin."

XI) BELOW ARE MANY POSSIBLE REASONS FOR SICKNESS AND SUFFERING:

XII) EDUCATIONAL:

A) HE LEARNED ABIDING FAITH:

Job 13:15-18 "Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him. {16} He also <shall be> my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him. {17} Hear diligently my speech, and my declaration with your ears. {18} Behold now, I have ordered <my> cause; I know that I shall be justified."

Psalms 119:65-72 "Thou hast dealt well with thy servant, O LORD, according unto thy word. {66} Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments. {67} Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word. {68} Thou <art> good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes. {69} The proud have forged a lie against me: <but> I will keep thy precepts with <my> whole heart. {70} Their heart is as fat as grease; <but> I delight in thy law. {71} <It is> good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes. {72} The law of thy mouth <is> better unto me than thousands of gold and silver."

B) HE LEARNED THAT GOD IS HIS REDEEMER:

Job 19:25-27 "For I know <that> my redeemer liveth, and <that> he shall stand at the latter <day> upon the earth: {26} And <though> after my skin <worms> destroy this <body>, yet in my flesh shall I see God: {27} Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; <though> my reins be consumed within me."

See my paper: "Jesus Life, Events & Identity" JESUS KEY EVENTS SHOW HIS LIFE & IDENTIFY WHO HE IS. for more information on this subject.

C) HE LEARNED CONFIDENT IN HIS OWN FUTURE VINDICATION:

Job 13:18 "Behold now, I have ordered <my> cause; I know that I shall be justified."

Job 16:19 "Also now, behold, my witness <is> in heaven, and my record <is> on high."

D) HE LEARNED THAT GOD IS ABSOLUTELY SOVEREIGN:

Job 42:1-2 "Then Job answered the LORD, and said, {2} I know that thou canst do every <thing>, and <that> no thought can be withholden from thee."

See my paper: "Is Free Will Biblical?" MANY SCRIPTURES ARE SHOWN FOR PREDESTINATED. OPPOSING FREEWILL VIEWS ARE DISCUSSED for more information on this subject.

See my paper: "God Will Receive All the Glory" DISCUSSED IS PREDESTINATION PLAN OF GOD FOR SALVATION, SANCTIFICATION, PERFECTION, AND GLORIFICATION. for more information on this subject.

XIII) PUNITIVE: Punishment and judgment. This is what Job's three friends believed. They are correct that the scriptures teach that the righteous are blessed and wicked suffer. Deuteronomy 28 presents the blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. There are many other reasons for sickness.

See my paper: "Judgments of Believer & Unbeliever" PRESENTED ARE SEVERAL JUDGMENTS FOR THE SAVED AND UN-SAVED for more information on this subject.

XIV) SOWING AND REAPING PRINCIPLE: Cause and effects. A girl could ask for forgiveness for an adultery affair, but she still have a baby.

Galatians 6:7 "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."

1 Corinthians 5:5 "To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus."

1 Corinthians 11:29-30 "For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. {30} For this cause many <are> weak and sickly among you, and many sleep."

See my paper: "Sermon on the Mount" MATTHEW 5-7 & LUKE 6, 11 & 12 ARE DISCUSSED VERSE BY VERSE WITH KINGDOM PRINCIPLES for more information on this subject.

XV) WHY DOES THE WICKED PROSPER?: God used them to punishment Israel.

Job 21:7 "Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power?"

Psalms 73:1-3 "A Psalm of Asaph. Truly God <is> good to Israel, <even> to such as are of a clean heart. {2} But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped. {3} For I was envious at the foolish, <when> I saw the prosperity of the wicked."

Psalms 37:38 "But the transgressors shall be destroyed together: the end of the wicked shall be cut off."

XVI) DISCIPLINE: Chastisement. Elihu, the fourth friend of Job, says God also sends suffering to prevent man from sin (Job 33:17-18,30), rebellion (Job 34:37) and not trust or mercy of God (Job 35:14-16).

Hebrews 12:6-8 "For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. {7} If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? {8} But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons."

Proverbs 3:11-12 "My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: {12} For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son <in whom> he delighteth."

XVII) HUMBLE PRIDEFUL: Job understands that his was a righteous pride. Similar pride to the publican and sinner parable (Luke 18:13-14).

Job 40:4 "Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth."

Job 42:1-6 "Then Job answered the LORD, and said, {2} I know that thou canst do every <thing>, and <that> no thought can be withholden from thee. {3} Who <is> he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not. {4} Hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak: I will ask of thee, and declare thou unto me. {5} I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. {6} Wherefore I abhor <myself>, and repent in dust and ashes."

See my paper: "Grace" DEFINITION OF GRACE; GRACE FOR BELIEVERS; ONLY KINDNESS TO UNBELIEVERS; GRACE GROWTH; GRACE SAVES for more information on this subject.

XVIII) PATIENCE ENDURANCE:

Philippians 4:11-13 "Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, <therewith> to be content. {12} I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. {13} I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."

James 1:2-4 "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; {3} Knowing <this>, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. {4} But let patience have <her> perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing."

James 5:7-11 "Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. {8} Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. {9} Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door. {10} Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. {11} Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy."

1 Peter 5:10 "But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle <you>."

XXI) TEACH OBEDIENCE: Trials, temptations, ridicule & rejections are learning experiences.  Trials should not be resisted, but we should react as God teachers.

Hebrews 5:8 "Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;"

XX) GLORIFIES GOD:

John 21:18-19 "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry <thee> whither thou wouldest not. {19} This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me."

1 Peter 4:16 "Yet if <any man suffer> as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf."

2 Corinthians 12:8-10 "For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. {9} And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. {10} Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong."

XXI) SHARE IN CHRIST'S SUFFERING:

Philippians 1:29 "For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;"

Philippians 3:10 "That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;"

Colossians 1:24 "Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church:"

2 Timothy 3:12 "Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution."

XXII) CHRIST OUR EXAMPLE:

Matthew 5:10 "Blessed <are> they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Acts 14:22 "Confirming the souls of the disciples, <and> exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God."

Hebrews 13:12-13 "Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. {13} Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach."

2 Timothy 2:12 "If we suffer, we shall also reign with <him>: if we deny <him>, he also will deny us:"

2 Thessalonians 1:4-5 "So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure: {5} <Which is> a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:"

1 Peter 2:21 "For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:"

1 Peter 4:13 "But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy."

Acts 4:29 "And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,"

1 Peter 1:3-7 "Blessed <be> the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, {4} To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, {5} Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. {6} Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: {7} That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:"

See my paper: "Kingdom of God & Heaven" JESUS CAME TO ESTABLISH HIS KINGDOM. WHAT IS HIS KINGDOM? HOW CAN IT BE ENTERED? for more information on this subject.

XXVI) OTHERS OLD TESTAMENT SAINTS WHO SUFFERED TRIALS:

See my paper: "Israel & Jewish People in God's Plan" JESUS JEWISHNESS, ISRAEL, JERUSALEM, & JEWS IN GOD'S PLAN; JEWS & GENTILE SALVATION for more information on this subject.

A) ABRAHAM: He waited 25 years for child & then was told to offer as a sacrifice and kill him.

Genesis 22:9-12 "And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. {10} And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. {11} And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here <am> I. {12} And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only <son> from me."

B) JOSEPH: He was sold as slave, put in prison, and not rewarded by butler who Joseph interprets dreams for. These trials lasted years.

Genesis 50:17-20 "So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him. {18} And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we <be> thy servants. {19} And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for <am> I in the place of God? {20} But as for you, ye thought evil against me; <but> God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as <it is> this day, to save much people alive."Joseph brothers feared, when Jacob died, for selling Joseph. Psalms 105:16-21 "Moreover he called for a famine upon the land: he brake the whole staff of bread. {17} He sent a man before them, <even> Joseph, <who> was sold for a servant: {18} Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron: {19} Until the time that his word came: the word of the LORD tried him. {20} The king sent and loosed him; <even> the ruler of the people, and let him go free. {21} He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance:"

C) DANIEL'S THREE FRIENDS: Trial required going through the furnace.

Daniel 3:16-18 "Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we <are> not careful to answer thee in this matter. {17} If it be <so>, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver <us> out of thine hand, O king. {18} But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up." God is able. We know God is all powerful. God will deliver us (Faith statement).  The last statement could occur in our life (even if He does not). We are to trust in God even in going to death with our faith.

XXV) JESUS STATEMENT ON SUFFERING: Some suffer for sin & other for God.

John 9:2-3 "And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him."

XXVI) LAZARUS: Lazarus and his sisters suffered though Lazarus sickness and death. The sisters had faith for his healing if Jesus was there. They thought his death was the end. Jesus was able to teach several principles about resurrect and death and receive glory by Lazarus resurrection.

John 11:3-5,15 "Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. {4} When Jesus heard <that>, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. {5} Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus."

XXVII) JESUS TEACHING MERCIFUL VERSUS HARSH JUDGMENT IN VIOLENT DEATHS: The disciples beliefs like Job's friends beliefs were that people suffer for their sins or parents sins. Jesus shows these are not the reasons these people suffered.

Luke 13:1-5 "There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. {2} And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? {3} I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. {4} Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? {5} I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish."

XXVIII) HEBREWS FAITH ROLL CALL OF HEROS OF FAITH:

Hebrews 11:35-40 "Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: {36} And others had trial of <cruel> mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: {37} They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; {38} (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and <in> mountains, and <in> dens and caves of the earth. {39} And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: {40} God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

XXIX) HIDDEN PURPOSE:

The book of Job vindicates God's faith in Job. Job is the battleground between Satan and God. Goodness for goodness sake not for rewards.

XXX) JOB END STATE: God never answered Job since what He does is perfect and correct. Job was the pawn in the match between Satan and God. Job did not have Chapters 1 and 2 to understand his trials. Just like we do not always know the reason for our trials. We are to trust in God as we go through our trials.

Job 42:10 "And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twicSee my paper: "Messianic Prophecies That Jesus Fulfilled" OLD TESTAMENT SCRIPTURES PROPHECIES & THEIR NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT BY JESUS. for more information on this subject.e as much as he had before."

Job 42:12-13 "So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses. {13} He had also seven sons and three daughters."

Job 42:15-17 "And in all the land were no women found <so> fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren. {16} After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, <even> four generations. {17} So Job died, <being> old and full of days." All people go through trails. How we act is what God is looking at.
