This paper discusses the book of Malachi. Malachi is the last prophetical book of the Old Testament during the absence of governor Nehemiah. Nehemiah was another prophet of the time which discusses many of the same subjects. Both Malachi and Nehemiah were written to Jerusalem in Judah.

Malachi 3:14 "Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts?"

Malachi 1:1 "The burden of the word of the /\ LORD /\ to Israel by Malachi."

Burden of the word of the Lord to Israel: Only used in three places.

Zechariah 9:1 "The burden of the word of the LORD in the land of Hadrach, and Damascus <shall be> the rest thereof: when the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel, <shall be> toward the LORD."

Zechariah 12:1 "The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him."

Malachi: His name means my messenger (Malachi 3:1). Both priests and prophets were called messengers of the Lord (Malachi 2:7, Haggai 1:13). The name appears nowhere else in scripture and nothing is know of his family or background.

Numbers 6:23-27 "Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them, {24} The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: {25} The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: {26} The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. {27} And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them." Malachi 2:3 "Behold, /\ I /\ will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, <even> the dung of your solemn feasts; and <one> shall take you away with it."

Malachi 2:4 "And ye shall know that /\ I /\ have sent this commandment unto you, that /\ my /\ [ covenant ] might be with Levi, saith the /\ LORD /\ of hosts."

Numbers 3:12 "And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn that openeth the matrix among the children of Israel: therefore the Levites shall be mine;" Levites' were the priest tribe. They had no land.

1) I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD {Malachi 4:5}

2) He shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse {Malachi 4:6}

Prophet: A spokesman for another, as for God. Other names/titles in the Bible are as follows: Man of God; Servant of the Lord; Messenger of the Lord; and Seer (to see).

Exodus 7:1-2 "And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet. {2} Thou shalt speak all that I command thee: and Aaron thy brother shall speak unto Pharaoh, that he send the children of Israel out of his land."

Numbers 11:29 "And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD'S people were prophets, <and> that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!"

Jeremiah 1:7 "But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I <am> a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak."

Amos 3:7-8 "Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. {8} The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD hath spoken, who can but prophesy?"

1 Samuel 9:9 "(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for <he that is> now <called> a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)"

John 15:15 "Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you."

1 Corinthians 12:28 "And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healing, helps, governments, diversities of tongues."

Prophet would meet the following:

- Spoke only in the name of the Lord (Yahweh).

- God had a special calling for him to by a prophet.

- His life matches his position. He did not practice divination.

- Do not assume signs and wonders prove his position.

- His God given prophecies came to pass.

Deuteronomy 13:1-3 "If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, {2} And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; {3} Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul."

2 Thessalonians 2:9 "<Even him>, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,"

- His message was in harmony with previous revelation. History will confirms his authenticity.

Deuteronomy 18:21-22 "And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? {22} When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that <is> the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, <but> the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him."

- Moral quality and spiritual essence of the message.

- Inner witness to the Holy Spirit believer.

- Test the prophets revelation against what the Bible states.

1 Corinthians 14:29 "Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge."

Holy Scriptures:

God's word is above that of His name:

Psalms 138:2 "I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name." God's words is most important.

Word of God is Jesus (God's name) who is in every Scriptures:

Isaiah 55:11 "So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it." The Bible, scriptures, are God's words.

Psalms 40:7 "Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book <it is> written of me," (fulfilled see Hebrews 10:7) The Bible is centered on Jesus (God) before & after He is manifested in flesh.

John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Jesus is God & the Word of God.

WHY: He shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children lest I smite the earth

Malachi 4:6 "And /\ he /\ shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest /\ I /\ come and smite the earth with a curse."

He shall turn hearts of the father/children to the children/father

Genesis 18:19 "For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him."

Luke 1:17 "And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
