This paper discusses the disciples, other people in the church, and their relationships to Jesus. All scriptures are from the King James' version Bible.

INDUCTIVE COMMENTS:

THEME: Friends & family: Peter & Andrew; James & John; Philip & Bartholomew (Nathaniel); James (less), Matthew (publican) & Judas (Thaddaeus or Labbaeus). Possibly Simon (Zelotes) from tradition. Cousins: James & John (Salome - Mary's sister); James, Judas, & Matthew (Mary - Mary's sister).

After Jesus resurrection, He visits His brother James who then believes. This is true for all believers that God reveals Himself to be the rising Christ for the believer to have faith.

1 Corinthians 15:7 "After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles." Personal visit of resurrected Christ may have been how his conversion was done.

PURPOSE:

Jesus had a special relationship with a small group of people. The group included his mother, two brothers, his disciples, & a number of friends. He was very close to the disciple John who he loved & committed his mother's care to. He had a closer tie to three of his disciples: Peter, James & John and to the twelve. Jesus had many disciples (70 in Luke 10:1) & (500 in 1 Corinthians 15:6). Many of the disciples upon finding Jesus led their brothers to the Lord. In fact, even Jesus went to his brother James when he was resurrected. The woman at the cross show that many of Jesus' disciples had a cousin relationship with him. These people may have known Jesus early in his life, but unlike his brothers they did not reject his ministry. Even his own town's people rejected his ministry. Living near Jesus and seeing his perfect life, did not assure a person's believing in Jesus unto salvation.

Mark 6:4 "But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house."

Matthew 13:57 "And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house."

John 20:30-31 "And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: {31} But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name."

KEY VERSE:

Matthew 10:2-4 "Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James <the son> of Zebedee, and John his brother; {3} Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James <the son> of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; {4} Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him."

Mark 3:16-19 "And Simon he surnamed Peter; {17} And James the <son> of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder: {18} And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the <son> of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Canaanite, {19} And Judas Iscariot, which also betrayed him: and they went into an house."

Luke 6:14-16 "Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, {15} Matthew and Thomas, James the <son> of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes, {16} And Judas <the brother> of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor." Brother in the NIV is son. Greek: Judas of James.

Acts 1:13 "And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James <the son> of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas <the brother> of James."

WHO: God mainly by Bible authors Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Paul

TO WHOM: Elected Christians

WHAT: Friends & family: Peter & Andrew; James & John; Philip & Bartholomew (Nathaniel); James (less), Matthew (publican) & Judas (Thaddaeus or Labbaeus). Possibly Simon (Zelotes) from tradition. Cousins: James & John (Salome - Mary's sister); James, Judas, & Matthew (Mary - Mary's sister).

WHY: Jesus brothers and many others did not receive Him gospel message.

Matthew 13:55-56 "Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? {56} And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this <man> all these things?"

Jesus brothers did not believe and wanted Him to die.

John 7:1-9 "After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him. {2} Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand. {3} His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. {4} For <there is> no man <that> doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, show thyself to the world. {5} For neither did his brethren believe in him. {6} Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready. {7} The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil. {8} Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast: for my time is not yet full come. {9} When he had said these words unto them, he abode <still> in Galilee. {10} But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret." They probably wanted Jesus killed because of jealousy.

WAY: After Jesus resurrection, He visits His brother James who now believes.

1 Corinthians 15:7 "After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles." Personal visit of resurrected Christ may have been how his conversion was done.

Acts 21:18 "And the <day> following Paul went in with us unto James; and all the elders were present."  James became a leader in the Church

1 Corinthians 15:7 "After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles."

Galatians 1:19 "But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord's brother."

1 Corinthians 9:5 "Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and <as> the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?"

James 1:1 "James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting."

Acts 1:14 "These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren." Later several family members became believers.

WHEREAS: Jesus family considered Him to be mad or crazy.

Mark 3:21 "And when his friends heard <of it>, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself." (Acts 26:24 "And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad.")

Mark 3:30-35 "Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit. {31} There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him. {32} And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee. {33} And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren? {34} And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! {35} For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother."

Luke 8:19-21 "Then came to him <his> mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press. {20} And it was told him <by certain> which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee. {21} And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it."

WHERE: Israel

WHEN: At time of Jesus of earth.

WHILE: Jude’s name means praised. Jude possibly also wanted to see Jesus killed (see John 7:1-9 under James). He did not believe in Jesus. He later wrote the book of Jude.

Mark 6:3 "Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him."

Jude 1 "Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, <and> called:"

They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? {39} He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. {40} "One of the two which heard John <speak>, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. {41} He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. {42} And he brought him to Jesus. Philip saith unto him, Come and see. {47} Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! {48} Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. {49} Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel."

Matthew 13:55-56 "Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? {56} And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this <man> all these things?"

B) BROTHERS DID NOT BELIEVE IN JESUS AND MAY HAVE WANTED HIM KILL:

A) PROPHECY OF JESUS RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS FAMILY:

Psalms 69:8-9 "I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children. {9} For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me."

B) FAMILY CONSIDERED JESUS TO BE MAD:

C) JESUS AND HIS DISCIPLES WENT TO WEDDING AT CANA:

John 2:12 "After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days." Jesus went to wedding with family & disciples.

D) SUPPORT FOR JESUS AND HIS DISCIPLE MINISTRY:

Luke 24:10 "It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary <the mother> of James, and other <women that were> with them, which told these things unto the apostles."

Luke 8:3 "And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance."

Luke 24:18 "And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?" Two disciples on road to Emmaus met resurrected Jesus.

John 19:25 "Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the <wife> of Cleophas, and Mary" Magdalene."
