This paper discusses the book of Joel.. Another prophet of the time was Obadiah. The king of Judah was Joash (Jehoash) as mention in 2 Kings 11:21-12:21 & 2 Chronicles 24:1-27. Joash and the king that follows (his son) Amaziah "did that which was right in the sight of the Lord." Joash was under ten when the book was written (a possible reason for no comments about the king). Jehoiada (the high priest and his uncle) guided him until Jehoiada's death after which Joash started doing wrong. Much is written about the priests and sacrifice. Both of the kings did wrong later in their lives. All scriptures are from the King James' version Bible.

Joel 1:15 "Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come."

Joel 1:1 "The word of the /\ LORD /\ that came to Joel the son of Pethuel."

Word of the Lord: God's word is alive and active.

Isaiah 55:11 "So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper <in the thing> whereto I sent it."

Prophet would meet the following:

- Spoke only in the name of the Lord (Yahweh).

- God had a special calling for him to by a prophet.

- His life matches his position. He did not practice divination.

- Do not assume signs and wonders prove his position.

- His God given prophecies came to pass.

Deuteronomy 13:1-3 "If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, {2} And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; {3} Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul."

2 Thessalonians 2:9 "<Even him>, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,"

- His message was in harmony with previous revelation. History will confirms his authenticity.

Deuteronomy 18:21-22 "And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? {22} When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that <is> the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, <but> the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him."

- Moral quality and spiritual essence of the message.

- Inner witness to the Holy Spirit believer.

- Test the prophets revelation against what the Bible states.

1 Corinthians 14:29 "Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge."

Holy Scriptures:

God's word is above that of His name:

Psalms 138:2 "I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name." God's words is most important.

Word of God is Jesus (God's name) who is in every Scriptures:

John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Jesus is God & the Word of God.

Joel 1:2 "Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your [ days ], or even in the [ days ] of your fathers?" Elders were recognized officials. See also 1:14.

Joel 1:3 "Tell ye your children of it, and <let> your children <tell> their children, and their children another generation."

Exodus 10:2 "And that thou mayest tell in the ears of thy son, and of thy son's son, what things I have wrought in Egypt, and my signs which I have done among them; that ye may know how that I am the LORD."

Joel 1:4 "That which the palmerworm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath the caterpillar eaten." In the NIV these are all listed as locust.

Locust: Total destruction by locust and other insects. Used by God for divine judgment.

Deuteronomy 28:38-39 "Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field, and shalt gather <but> little in; for the locust shall consume it. {39} Thou shalt plant vineyards, and dress <them>, but shalt neither drink <of> the wine, nor gather <the grapes>; for the worms shall eat them."

Revelation 9:2-4 "And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. {3} And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. {4} And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads."

WHY: Ye drunkards all ye drinkers of wine .. it is cut off from your mouth

Joel 1:5 "Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine, for it is cut off from your mouth." Only sin mention suggests self-indulgent life-style.

WHAT: A nation is come up upon my land, strong .. teeth of a great lion

Joel 1:6 "For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number, whose teeth <are> the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a [ great ] lion." Later called Lord's army 2:11,25.

Without number: Phases used several times i.e. Ps 105:34.

Teeth are the teeth of a loin:

Daniel 7:4 "The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man's heart was given to it." Symbolic of nation of Babylon.

Revelation 9:7-8 "And the shapes of the locusts <were> like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads <were> as it were crowns like gold, and their faces <were> as the faces of men. {8} And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as <the teeth> of lions."

Revelation 13:2 "And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority."

He hath laid my vine waste: He here meaning God.

Matthew 24:29-30 "Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: {30} And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory."

Joel 3:16 "The /\ LORD /\ also shall roar out of Zion, and utter /\ his /\ voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the /\ LORD /\ <will be> the hope of /\ his /\ people, and the strength of the children of Israel." Jesus is coming. God's people blessed.

V) ISRAEL FUTURE BLESSING: {JOEL 3:17- 3:21}

WHAT: So shall ye know that I <am> the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy

Joel 3:17 "So shall ye know that /\ I /\ <am> the LORD your /\ God /\ dwelling in Zion, /\ my /\ holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more."

WAY: The mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the LORD

Joel 3:18 "And it shall come to pass in that [ day ], <that> the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the /\ LORD /\, and shall water the valley of Shittim." Sounds like today but it will be better.

Joel 3:19 "Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence <against> the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land."

Joel 3:20 "But Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation." Promise by God.

WHY: For I will cleanse their blood <that> I have not leansed: for the LORD dwelleth in Zion

Joel 3:21 "For /\ I /\ will cleanse their blood <that> /\ I /\ have not leansed: for the /\ LORD /\ dwelleth in Zion."
