This paper discusses the Bible book of second John. John writes that Christians should walk in love and truth in their belief of who Jesus is (1-6). Second John: uses the words love (4 times), truth or Jesus (3 times), and commandments to love and walk in truth (3 times). The Apostle John was the last surviving original apostle alive. He was very concerned with false teachings entering the church. This is a short epistle as he wants to visit them {12}. This is the only New Testament epistle written to woman & children {1}. This is a personal letter to this woman and her family, however, it does includes God's word to us as partners in the doctrine on Christ.

He is the third of the closest disciples to Jesus. He is also one of the three pillars of the church, Paul refers to in Galatians 2:9. He wrote John, 1st John, 2nd John, 3rd John, & Revelation. John was the Last book of the Bible written.

Elder: The Apostle John call himself the Elder (he is quite old at this time). John uses this address also in 3 John 1. He also uses this title to define his office as Pastor. Elder = Pastor = Bishop etc.

The Church officers of Elder, Overseer, Presbyter, Bishop, Pastor and Shepherd are all similar positions.

Overseer is the same Greek word Bishop used in Philippians 1:1, 1 Timothy 3:2, Titus 1:7 and 1 Peter 2:25. Also called Elder in Acts 14:23 which is the same position as Bishop and Presbyters as found in 1 Timothy 4:14 and 1 Timothy 5:17. "To feed" is the same Greek word as shepherd. Pastor is found in Ephesians 4:11 and is the Greek word for shepherd. The shepherd is the one into whose care the sheep (flock) have been committed for feeding, caring, and protection for growth to maturity. The purpose of the different words are as follows: Elder indicates a mature spiritual experienced person in a position of authority. Bishop indicates the character of the work undertaken as overseer or guardian. Shepherd or Pastor indicates the function or responsibility of watching, teaching, and guiding the flock.

This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. {1 Timothy 3:1} A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; {1 Timothy 3:2} Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; {1 Timothy 3:3} One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; {1 Timothy 3:4} (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) {1 Timothy 3:5} Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. {1 Timothy 3:6} Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. {1 Timothy 3:7}

Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.{Acts 6:2} Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. {Acts 6:3} But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. {Acts 6:4}

Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. {Acts 20:28} For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. {Acts 20:29}

LET THE ELDERS THAT RULE BE COUNTED OF DOUBLE HONOUR, WHO LABOUR IN THE WORD AND DOCTRINE, THE SCRIPTURE SAITH, THOU SHALT NOT MUZZLE THE OX THAT TREADETH OUT THE CORN, THE LABOURER IS WORTHY OF REWARD, AGAINST AN ELDER ACCUSATION, BEFORE TWO OR THREE WITNESSES, THEM THAT SIN REBUKE, SO OTHERS MAY FEAR, OBSERVE THESE THINGS WITHOUT PREFERRING, DOING NOTHING BY PARTIALITY.

Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. {1 Timothy 5:17} For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward. {1 Timothy 5:18} Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses. {1 Timothy 5:19} Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear. {1 Timothy 5:20} I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality. {1 Timothy 5:21}

Elect lady: God sovereign purpose to call and predestines a person. God chosen them, before the earth's foundation, for his purpose. Not according to the person's good works, but God's grace for him. God's calls to those He elects: Effectual calling by God with a positive response by man. God calls for his purpose. God: predestines, called, justified & glorified the person he wants to save. We just respond.

GRACE DEFINITION: Unmerited flavor from God to man. Getting what we do not deserve as compared with mercy: not getting what we deserve.

(1) Titus 3:5 "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;" Mercy not grace

GRACE IS A GIFT:

(1) Romans 5:15 "But not as the offence, so also <is> the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, <which is> by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many." Gift from God to elected believers only

Ephesians 2:8-9 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: <it is> the gift of God: {9} Not of works, lest any man should boast." God gives grace & we believe unto salvation. It is a gift of God and not of man's work.

WE ARE SAVED BY GRACE:

(1) Psalms 84:11 "For the LORD God <is> a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good <thing> will he withhold from them that walk uprightly." God gives the grace so man can walk saved

(2) Acts 15:11 "But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they." Grace from God to save the elect

(3) Romans 11:6 "And if by grace, then <is it> no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if <it be> of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work." God's grace is not man's works

GRACE GROWS BY KNOWLEDGE OF JESUS & OUR HUMILITY:

(1) Proverbs 3:34 "Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly." Grace to lowly

(2) James 4:6 "But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble." Grace to humble

(3) 1 Peter 5:5 "Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all <of you> be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble."

(4) 2 Peter 1:2 "Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord," Grace multipled by knowledge of God

(5) 2 Peter 3:18 "But grow in grace, and <in> the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him <be> glory both now and for ever. Amen."

GOD GIVES ONLY LOVING KINDNESS TO UNBELIEVER: Only Christians receive God's grace starting with salvation making them God's children. God provides loving kindness to man so that he can exist.

(1) Matthew 5:45 "That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust." Loving kindness

(2) Acts 14:17 "Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness." Loving kindness

(3) 1 Timothy 6:17 "Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;" Loving kindness

MAN MAY FAIL TO RECEIVE GOD'S GRACE: God provides grace to only His Christians. Unbelievers do not receive grace in vain, are bitter & defiled, have wrong gospel, & deny Jesus.

(1) 2 Corinthians 6:1 "We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain." God is blessing, but the unbeliever is not receiving making the grace vain

(2) Galatians 1:6-7 "I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: {7} Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ." To follow the wrong gospel removes the person from grace.

(3) Hebrews 12:15 "Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;" Bitterness leads to failed grace.

(4) Jude 1:4 "For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ." God's grace used wrong leads man to denying Christ.

(1) By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. {5} And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. {Romans 5:2, 5}

(2) And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these <is> charity. {1 Corinthians 13:13} Charity = love

(3) For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. {6} For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. {Galatians 5:5-6}

(4) According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: {2:8} For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: {Ephesians 1:4, 2:8}

(7) Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. {23} Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) {24} And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: {Hebrews 10:22-24, 11:1}

L) God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: God is a Triunity. God can not be divided. Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit are the way the one God reveals Himself. If one sees Jesus, he also sees the Father and the Holy Spirit at the same time since God can not be separated (Colossians 1:15). Jesus is perfect man and God. Jesus was always God, but at His birth become true man. However, in the plan of God, Jesus was true man before the world came into existence.

Triunity Godhead presented as equals. Jesus is the fullness of the Godhead in Himself.

Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me. {46} Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father. {John 6:32-46}

(11) As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. {58} This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. {John 6:57-58}
