BACKGROUND:

Paul had never been to the Colossians Church. They were started by a convert of Paul - Epaphras. See Colossians 1: The two Epistles letters, Ephesians and Colossians, were written about the same time and are very similar. Colossians was written to oppose the heresy false teachers of Greek philosophy using human wisdom of worshiping angels, legalism, & traditions. Colossians and Ephesians also emphasizes Christ as head of the church with a unity of Jew and Gentile fellow heirs of the church the body of Christ. Colossians has Jesus the Christ receiving the supremacy as the divine Son of God.

OVERVIEW COMPARISON OF COLOSSIANS TO EPHESIANS

COMPARISON

COLOSSIANS

EPHESIANS

Christ as God's Divine Son

Preeminence of Christ authority over His creation for Himself

Colossians 1:16-17 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: {17} And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Christ created all things

Ephesians 1:21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

Ephesians 3:9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

Christ as head of the Church

Christ the head of the body the church

Colossians 1:18, 24 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. {24} Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church: Colossians 2:19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.

Christ the head of the church

Ephesians 1:22-23 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, {23} Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

Ephesians 4:15-16 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: {16} From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

Mystery - Jews & Gentiles in Church

Mystery of Jews & Gentiles who now have Christ in them

Colossians 1:26-27 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: {27} To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Mystery unity of Jew & Gentile in Christ

Ephesians 3:4-6 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) {5} Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; {6} That the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

Christians as part of Christ body

Complete (unity) in Christ

Colossians 2:2, 10 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; {10} And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

Christians are members of Christ earthly body

Ephesians 3:6 That the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

Ephesians 4:16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

Ephesians 2:1-6 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; {2} Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: {3} Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. {4} But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, {5} Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) {6} And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

Mystery of Jews & Gentiles in Christ Church

Colossians 1:26-27 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: {27} To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Ephesians 3:4-6 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) {5} Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; {6} That the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

Law of Moses has been terminated by His death on the cross

Colossians 2:14-16 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; {15} And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. {16} Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

Ephesians 2:14-15 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; {15} Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

Be holy, cast off sinful works, old man/new man, mind of righteousness

Colossians 3:1-17 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. {2} Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. {3} For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. {4} When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. {5} Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: {6} For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: {7} In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. {8} But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. {9} Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; {10} And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: {11} Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. {12} Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; {13} Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. {14} And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. {15} And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. {16} Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. {17} And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Ephesians 4:17-32 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, {18} Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: {19} Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all {20} uncleanness with greediness. {21} But ye have not so learned Christ; {22} If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: {23} That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; {24} And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. {25} Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. {26} Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: {27} Neither give place to the devil. {28} Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. {29} Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. {30} And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. {31} Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: {32} And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

Ephesians 5:1-13 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; {2} And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. {3} But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; {4} Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. {5} For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. {6} Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. {7} Be not ye therefore partakers with them. {8} For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: {9} (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) {10} Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. {11} And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. {12} For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. {13} But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.

Put on His Spirit in new inner man

Colossians 3:9-10 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; {10} And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Submission & balance

Colossians 3:18-25 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. {19} Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. {20} Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. {21} Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. {22} Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: {23} And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; {24} Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. {25} But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons. Colossians 4:1 Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.

Ephesians 5:21-33 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. {22} Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. {23} For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. {24} Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. {25} Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

Ephesians 6:1-9 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. {2} Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) {3} That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. {4} And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. {5} Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; {6} Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; {7} With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: {8} Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. {9} And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.

Ephesians 6:18-19 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; {19} And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,

Tychicus, brother & faithful minister of the Lord

I) SALUTATIONS: {EPHESIANS 1:1-2}

Paul: Saul: means asked for, and Paul: means little or small. Paul is in Rome in prison, but his care for the church is of most importances. He does believe he will leave the prison as he said that he be coming to them in Philemon 22 & Philippians 1:26 & 2:24. Paul had never been in Colosse, but on his fourth missionary journey he finally went there. Paul had been to Ephesus a few times and spent two years there (Acts 19:10) on his third missionary journey.

MISC: PAUL’S QUALIFICATIONS {2 CORINTHIANS 1:1 – 13:14}

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GOD’S CHOSE PAUL

(1) Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia: {2 Corinthians 1:1}

(2) Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; {2 Corinthians 1:21}

(3) Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. {2 Corinthians 3:6}

(4) Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; {2 Corinthians 4:1}

(5) And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; {2 Corinthians 5:18}

(6) But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, {2 Corinthians 6:4}

(7) Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. {2 Corinthians 11:15}

(8) Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. {2 Corinthians 11:23}

PAUL HAS HOLY SPIRIT

(1) Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts. {2 Corinthians 1:22}

(2) Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. 2 Corinthians 3:6

(3) Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. {2 Corinthians 3:17}

(4) But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. {2 Corinthians 3:18}

(5) We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak; {2 Corinthians 4:13}

(6) Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. {2 Corinthians 5:5}

(7) By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, {2 Corinthians 6:6}

(8) The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen. {2 Corinthians 13:14}

PAUL DEPENDS ON GOD ALONE

(1) For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward. {2 Corinthians 1:12}

(2) Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. {2 Corinthians 2:14}

(3) Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; {2 Corinthians 3:5}

(4) Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. {2 Corinthians 3:6}

(5) But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. {2 Corinthians 4:7}

(6) We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain. {2 Corinthians 6:1}

(7) Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia; {2 Corinthians 8:1}

(8) And not that only, but who was also chosen of the churches to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by us to the glory of the same Lord, and declaration of your ready mind: {2 Corinthians 8:19}

(9) And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: {2 Corinthians 9:8}

(10) And by their prayer for you, which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you. {2 Corinthians 9:14}

(11) And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. {2 Corinthians 12:9}

PAUL WAS GIVEN APOSTLE AUTHORITY

(1) Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you: {2 Corinthians 10:1}

(2) But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. {2 Corinthians 10:2}

(3) For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: {2 Corinthians 10:3}

(4) (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) {2 Corinthians 10:4}

(5) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; {2 Corinthians 10:5}

(6) And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. {2 Corinthians 10:6}

(7) Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's. {2 Corinthians 10:7}

(8) For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed: {2 Corinthians 10:8}

(9) That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters. {2 Corinthians 10:9}

(10) For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible. {2 Corinthians 10:10}

(11) Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present. {2 Corinthians 10:11}

(12) I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing. {2 Corinthians 12:11}

(13) Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds. {2 Corinthians 12:12}

(14) Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction. {2 Corinthians 13:10}

PAUL’S DIVINE VISIONS

(1) It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. {2 Corinthians 12:1}

(2) I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven. {2 Corinthians 12:2}

(3) And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) {2 Corinthians 12:3}

(4) How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. {2 Corinthians 12:4}

(5) Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities. {2 Corinthians 12:5}

(6) For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me. {2 Corinthians 12:6}

(7) And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. {2 Corinthians 12:7}

PAUL’S MINISTRY TO CORINTHIANS

(1) And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea. {2 Corinthians 1:16}

(2) For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea. {2 Corinthians 1:19}

(3) For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. {2 Corinthians 4:15}

(4) Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you: {2 Corinthians 10:1}

5) For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ: {2 Corinthians 10:14}

(6) But though I be rude in speech, yet not in knowledge; but we have been thoroughly made manifest among you in all things. {2 Corinthians 11:6}

(7) Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds. {2 Corinthians 12:12}

(8) For what is it wherein ye were inferior to other churches, except it be that I myself was not burdensome to you? forgive me this wrong. {2 Corinthians 12:13}

(9) And lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they have committed. {2 Corinthians 12:21}

PAUL LOVES THE CHURCH

(1) For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you. {2 Corinthians 2:4}

(2) Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men: {2 Corinthians 3:2}

(3) Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshly tables of the heart. {2 Corinthians 3:3}

(4) For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: {2 Corinthians 5:14}

(5) By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, {2 Corinthians 6:6}

(6) O ye Corinthians, our mouth is open unto you, our heart is enlarged. {2 Corinthians 6:11}

(7) Ye are not straitened in us, but ye are straitened in your own bowels. {2 Corinthians 6:12}

(8) Now for a recompense in the same, (I speak as unto my children,) be ye also enlarged. {2 Corinthians 6:13}

(9) I speak not this to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you. {2 Corinthians 7:3}

(10) Wherefore? because I love you not? God knoweth. {2 Corinthians 11:11}

(11) And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I be loved. {2 Corinthians 12:15}

PAUL’S BLAMELESS CHARACTER AND ACTIONS

(1) For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward. {2 Corinthians 1:12}

(2) But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. {2 Corinthians 4:2}

(3) Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed: {2 Corinthians 6:3}

(4) But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, {2 Corinthians 6:4}

(5) Receive us; we have wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man. {2 Corinthians 7:2}

(6) Avoiding this, that no man should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us: {2 Corinthians 8:20}

(7) Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men. {2 Corinthians 8:21}

(8) Have I committed an offence in abasing myself that ye might be exalted, because I have preached to you the gospel of God freely? {2 Corinthians 11:7}

(9) I robbed other churches, taking wages of them, to do you service. {2 Corinthians 11:8}

(10) And when I was present with you, and wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren which came from Macedonia supplied: and in all things I have kept myself from being burdensome unto you, and so will I keep myself. {2 Corinthians 11:9}

PAUL WAS TRUTHFUL

(1) But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay. {2 Corinthians 1:18}

(2) For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ. {2 Corinthians 2:17}

(3) But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. {2 Corinthians 4:2}

(4) By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, {2 Corinthians 6:7}

(5) By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true; {2 Corinthians 6:8}

(6) Receive us; we have wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man. {2 Corinthians 7:2}

(7) For if I have boasted any thing to him of you, I am not ashamed; but as we spake all things to you in truth, even so our boasting, which I made before Titus, is found a truth. {2 Corinthians 7:14}

(8) As the truth of Christ is in me, no man shall stop me of this boasting in the regions of Achaia. {2 Corinthians 11:10}

(9) For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me. {2 Corinthians 12:6}

(10) Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds. {2 Corinthians 12:12}

(11) For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth. {2 Corinthians 13:8}

PAUL WAS PERSECUTED & SUFFERS FOR THE FAITH

(1) Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. {2 Corinthians 1:4}

(2) For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. {2 Corinthians 1:5}

(3) And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. {2 Corinthians 1:6}

(4) And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation. {2 Corinthians 1:7}

(5) For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life: {2 Corinthians 1:8}

(6) But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: {2 Corinthians 1:9}

(7) Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us; {2 Corinthians 1:10}

(8) We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; {2 Corinthians 4:8}

(9) Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; {2 Corinthians 4:9}

(10) Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. {2 Corinthians 4:10}

(11) For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.{2 Corinthians 4:11}

(12) So then death worketh in us, but life in you. {2 Corinthians 4:12}

(13) But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, {2 Corinthians 6:4}

(14) In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings; {2 Corinthians 6:5}

(15) As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; {2 Corinthians 6:9}

(16) As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things. {2 Corinthians 6:10}

(17) For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears. {2 Corinthians 7:5}

(18) In Damascus the governor under Aretas the king kept the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desirous to apprehend me: {2 Corinthians 11:32}

(19) And through Who is weak a window in a basket was I let down by the wall, and escaped his hands. {2 Corinthians 11:33}

PAUL’S INDIVIDUAL TRIALS

(1) We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; {2 Corinthians 4:8}

(2) Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; {2 Corinthians 4:9}

(3) Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. {2 Corinthians 4:10}

(4) For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. {2 Corinthians 4:11}

(5) So then death worketh in us, but life in you. {2 Corinthians 4:12}

(6) But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, {2 Corinthians 6:4}

(7) In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings; {2 Corinthians 6:5}

(8) By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, {2 Corinthians 6:6}

(9) By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, {2 Corinthians 6:7}

(10) By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true; {2 Corinthians 6:8}

(11) As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; {2 Corinthians 6:9}

(12) As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things. {2 Corinthians 6:10}

(13) Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. {2 Corinthians 11:23}

(14) Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. {2 Corinthians 11:24}

(15) Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; {2 Corinthians 11:25}

(16) In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; {2 Corinthians 11:26}

(17) In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. {2 Corinthians 11:27}

(18) Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches. {2 Corinthians 11:28}

(19), and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not? {2 Corinthians 11:29}

(20) If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities. {2 Corinthians 11:30}

(21) And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. {2 Corinthians 12:7}

(22) For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. {2 Corinthians 12:8}

(23) And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. {2 Corinthians 12:9}

(24) Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong. {2 Corinthians 12:10}

Grace: Getting what we do not deserve. It is a gift (Romans 5:15). We are saved by grace (Acts 15:11). It is given freely by God (Psalms 84:11). Grace grows by knowledge of Jesus (2 Peter 3:18) & humility (James 4:6 & 1 Peter 5:5).

See my paper: "Grace" DEFINITION OF GRACE; GRACE FOR BELIEVERS; ONLY KINDNESS TO UNBELIEVERS; GRACE GROWTH; GRACE SAVES for more information on this subject.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MISC: GRACE {EPHESIANS 1:2}

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GRACE DEFINITION: Unmerited flavor from God to man. Getting what we do not deserve as compared with mercy: not getting what we deserve.

(1) Titus 3:5 "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;" Mercy not grace

GRACE IS A GIFT:

(1) Romans 5:15 "But not as the offence, so also <is> the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, <which is> by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many." Gift from God to elected believers only

Ephesians 2:8-9 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: <it is> the gift of God: {9} Not of works, lest any man should boast." God gives grace & we believe unto salvation. It is a gift of God and not of man's work.

WE ARE SAVED BY GRACE:

(1) Psalms 84:11 "For the LORD God <is> a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good <thing> will he withhold from them that walk uprightly." God gives the grace so man can walk saved

(2) Acts 15:11 "But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they." Grace from God to save the elect

(3) Romans 11:6 "And if by grace, then <is it> no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if <it be> of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work." God's grace is not man's works

GRACE GROWS BY KNOWLEDGE OF JESUS & OUR HUMILITY:

(1) Proverbs 3:34 "Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly." Grace to lowly

(2) James 4:6 "But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble." Grace to humble

(3) 1 Peter 5:5 "Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all <of you> be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble."

(4) 2 Peter 1:2 "Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord," Grace multipled by knowledge of God

(5) 2 Peter 3:18 "But grow in grace, and <in> the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him <be> glory both now and for ever. Amen."

GOD GIVES ONLY LOVING KINDNESS TO UNBELIEVER: Only Christians receive God's grace starting with salvation making them God's children. God provides loving kindness to man so that he can exist.

(1) Matthew 5:45 "That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust." Loving kindness

(2) Acts 14:17 "Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness." Loving kindness

(3) 1 Timothy 6:17 "Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;" Loving kindness

MAN MAY FAIL TO RECEIVE GOD'S GRACE: God provides grace to only His Christians. Unbelievers do not receive grace in vain, are bitter & defiled, have wrong gospel, & deny Jesus.

(1) 2 Corinthians 6:1 "We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain." God is blessing, but the unbeliever is not receiving making the grace vain

(2) Galatians 1:6-7 "I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: {7} Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ." To follow the wrong gospel removes the person from grace.

(3) Hebrews 12:15 "Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;" Bitterness leads to failed grace.

(4) Jude 1:4 "For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ." God's grace used wrong leads man to denying Christ.

Peace: Hebrew word Shalom used for hello, good-bye & God bless you. Only God gives peace to ones spirit of forgiveness & restoration. See Ephesians 2:14 for KEY WORD details.

Peace the opposite to anxiety. Tranquility & worry free.

God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: God is a Triunity. God can not be divided. Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit are the way the one God reveals himself. If one sees Jesus, he also sees the Father and the Holy Spirit at the same time since God can not be separated (Colossians 1:15). Jesus is perfect man and perfect God. Jesus was always God, but at His birth become true man. However, in the plan of God, Jesus was true man before the world came into existence.

CHOSEN BY GOD:

According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: {Ephesians 1:4}

NOT FROM ANY GOOD IN US:

(1) The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. {2} The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. {3} They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

{Psalm 14:1-3}

(2) All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. {Isaiah 53:6}

(3) But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. {Isaiah 64:6}

(4) As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: {11} There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. {12} They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. {Romans 3:10-12}

BY HIS GRACE TO CHOOSE:

(1) Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, {6} To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. {Ephesians 1:5-6}

(2) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: {9} Not of works, lest any man should boast. {Ephesians 2:8-9}

HE DID NOT LOOK DOWN THE AGES TO SEE WHO WOULD UNDERSTAND OR RESPONSE TO HIS GRACE SINCE WE ARE ALL EQUALLY SINNERS:

(1) According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: {Ephesians 1:4}

(2) In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; {Ephesians 1:7}

(4) For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. {James 2:10)

IT IS NOT OUR WORKS BUT OF HIS WILL:

(1) According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: {5} Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, {Ephesians 1:4-5}

(2) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: {9} Not of works, lest any man should boast. {Ephesians 2:8-9}

(2) But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, {5} Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) {6}
And
hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: {7} That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. {Ephesians 2:4-7}

THEY WILL ASK JESUS INTO THEIR LIVES AND BELIEVE:

Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. {Ephesians 1:13-14}

MISC: GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT {JOHN 1:32 – 20:22} {EPHESIANS 1:13}

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(1) And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.{33} And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost {John 1:32-33}

(2) But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. {John 4:14}

(3) He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. {39} (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) {John 7:38-39}

(4) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever {17} Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you {John 14:16-17}

(5) Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. {John 14:23}

(6) But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you {John 14:26}

(7) But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me {John 15:26}

(8) Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you {8} And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment {9} Of sin, because they believe not on me {10} Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more {John 16:7-10}

(9) Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come {14} He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you {John 16:13-14}

(10) And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost {John 20:22}

Elijah raised child {1 Kings 17:19-23}; Elisha raised Stunammite son {2 Kings 4:32-37}; Elisha died & his bones raise dead person {2 Kings 13:20-21}; Upon Jesus death, dead saint arose in Jerusalem {Matthew 27:50-53}; Jesus raised Young man {Luke 7:12-15}; Jesus raised young girl {Luke 8:52-56}; {Matthew 9:18-19, 23-25}; {Mark 5:35-43}; and Jesus raised Lazarus {John 11:43-44}; Peter raised Dorcas {Acts 9:36-41}; Paul raised Eutychus who fell asleep and fell to his death {Acts 20:7-11}; Woman receive their dead raised back to life {Hebrews 11:35}. ONLY ALL THESE DIED AGAIN. JESUS DIED ONLY ONCE AND WAS FIRSTFRUITS RAISED WITH AN IMMORTAL BODY THAT WILL NOT DIE AGAIN.

(1) And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son? {19} And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed. {20} And he cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son? {21} And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again. {22} And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. {23} And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth. {1 Kings 17:18-23}

(2) And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed. {33} He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the LORD. {34} And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm. {35} Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. {36} And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son. {37} Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out. {2 Kings 4:32-37}

(3) And Elisha died, and they buried him. And the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year. {21} And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band of men; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha: and when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet. {2 Kings 13:20-21}
(4)
Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. {51} And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; {52} And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, {53} And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. {Matthew 27:50-53}

(5) Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. {13}
And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. {14} And
he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. {15} And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. {Luke 7:12-15}

(6) And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth. {53} And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. {54} And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise. {55} And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat. {56} And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done. {Luke 8:52-56}; {Matthew 9:18-19, 23-25}; {Mark 5:35-43}

(7) And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. {44} And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. {John 11:43-44}

(8) Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did. {37} And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber. {38} And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay to come to them. {39} Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them. {40} But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up. {41} And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive. {Acts 9:36-41}

(9) And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight. {8} And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together. {9} And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead. {10} And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him. {11} When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed. {12} And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted. {Acts 20:7-12}

(10) Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: {Hebrews 11:35}

We should desire his gifts for our life & the works will follow those gifts (1 Corinthians 12/14). We should be led by His Spirit (Galatians 5:16-26) and the works he assigned will flow. If we go after other works, we may not be in his will (Matthew 5:16, Titus 2:7, 1 Peter 2:12).

Colossians 1:21-22 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled {22} In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

PURPOSE:. REVEAL THE MYSTERY 0F THE CHURCH: WHICH IS JEWS & GENTILES, ONE IN CHRIST.

Ephesians 3:3, 6 "How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, {6} That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:"

Mystery Gentiles and Jews = one in Christ

By revelation he made known unto me the mystery: See Ephesians 1:9

Several mysteries are presented: Ephesians 3:6 (Jews & Gentiles as one body) & Ephesians 5:31-32 (wives & husbands as one. Also Jesus & church as one). Mystery is an unknown until God reveals it.

God revealed it to Paul first and then through him to the Christians .

Ephesians 4:17-32 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, {18} Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: {19} Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all {20} uncleanness with greediness. {21} But ye have not so learned Christ; {22} If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: {23} That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; {24} And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

(->) {12} Fight the good fight of faith, (->) lay hold on eternal life, (->) whereunto thou art also called, (->) and hast professed a good profession (->) before many witnesses."

JAMES SERIES OF GROWTH: Trials measure maturity of ones faith.

Temptation -> Try faith -> Works patience -> Perfect work -> Wanting nothing -> Tried -> Endure temptation -> Receive crown of life

James 1:2-4 "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; (->) {3} Knowing <this>, that the trying of your faith (->) worketh patience. (->) {4} But let patience (->) have <her> perfect work, (->) that ye may be perfect (->) and entire, wanting nothing."

Good Gifts -> Word of Truth -> First-fruits -> Doers of Word -> Not hearer -> Deceived

James 1:17-18 "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, (->) and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. {18} Of (->) his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that (->) we should be a kind of first-fruits of his creatures."

1 Peter 3:8-11 "Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: {9} Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. {10} For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: {11} Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it."

2nd PETER SERIES OF GROWTH: Series of growth to maturity will produce fruits towards divine nature to escape world's corruption.

Exceed great and precious promises -> Partakers of divine nature -> Escape corruption in world through lust -> Faith -> Virtue -> Knowledge -> Temperance -> Patience -> Godliness -> Brother kindness -> Charity (love in action) -> Abound -> Fruitful in knowledge of Lord Jesus

2 Peter 1:4-8 "Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: (->) that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, (->) having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. {5} And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith (->) virtue; and to virtue (->) knowledge; {6} And to knowledge (->) temperance; and to temperance (->) patience; and to patience (->) godliness; {7} And to godliness (->) brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness (->) charity. (->) {8} For if these things be in you, and (->) abound, (->) they make <you that ye shall> neither <be> barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ."

JUDE SERIES OF GROWTH:

Beloved -> Building up yourselves on your most holy faith -> Praying in the Holy Ghost -> Keep yourselves in the love of God -> Looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. -> Some have compassion -> Making a difference -> Others save with fear -> Pulling them out of the fire -> Hating even the garment spotted by the flesh -> Unto him that is able to keep you from falling -> To present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy

Jude 1:20-24 "But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, {21} Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. {22} And of some have compassion, making a difference: {23} And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. {24} Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,"

REVELATION SERIES OF GROWTH: Ephesians church good and bad

I know thy works -> thy labour -> thy patience -> how thou canst not bear them which are evil -> thou hast tried them which say they are apostles -> are not -> hast found them liars -> hast borne -> hast patience -> for my name's sake hast laboured -> hast not fainted -> Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee -> because thou hast left thy first love -> Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen -> repent -> do the first works

Revelation 2:2-6 "I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: {3} And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. {4} Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. {5} Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent."

SERIES TOWARDS DEATH: Trials show that one does not have faith.

Follow peace with all men -> Holiness -> Without which no man shall see the Lord -> Lest any man fail of the grace of God -> Root of bitterness springing up trouble you -> Thereby many be defiled -> Be any fornicator -> Profane person -> He would have inherited the blessing -> He was rejected -> No place of repentance -> He sought it carefully with tears

Hebrews 12:14-17 "Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: {15} Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; {16} Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. {17} For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears."

Tempted -> Man's Lust -> Enticed -> Lust conceived -> Sin -> Finished -> Death

James 1:13-15 "Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: {14} But every man is tempted, (->) when he is drawn away of his own lust, (->) and enticed. (->) {15} Then when lust hath conceived, (->) it bringeth forth sin: and sin, (->) when it is finished, (->) bringeth forth death."

CONCLUSION: Series towards Christian growth of maturity or death are to measure, test maturity, and prove ones real faith.

The Bible has many more growth maturity series. These are a few examples.

MISC: JESUS THE WORD OF GOD {JOHN 1:1 – 17:17} {EPHESIANS 6:17}

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(1) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God {John 1:1}

(2) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth {John 1:14}

(3) For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.{John 3:34}

(4) Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. {John 5:24}

(5) And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. {39} Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. {John 5:38-39}

(6) For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. {47} But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? {John 5:46-47}

(7) It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. {John 6:63}

(8) Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. {69} And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. {John 6:68-69}

(9) As he spake these words, many believed on him. {31} Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; {32} And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. {John 8:30-32}

(10) He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God. {John 8:47}

(11) Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? {35} If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; {John 10:34-35}

(12) And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. {48} He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day {John 12:47-48}

(13) He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. {49} For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. {John 12:48-49}

(14) Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. {11} Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake. {John 14:10-11}

(15) Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. {24} He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. {John 14:23-24}

(16) Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. {John 15:3}

(17) If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. {John 15:7}

(18) But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause. {John 15:25}

(19) I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. {8} For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. {John 17:6, 8}

(20) I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. {17} Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. {John 17:14, 17}

MISC: SAINTS PERSEVERANCE AND PERSISTENCE WITH ETERNAL REWARD {1 CORINTHIANS 9:24 - 9:27} {EPHESIANS 6:18}

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KEEP THE WORD:

I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. {7} Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. {8} For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. {John 17:6-8}

WITH BOLDNESS SPEAK THE WORD OF GOD:

And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, {30} By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. {31} And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. {32} And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. {33} And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. {Acts 4:29-33}

MAKE NOT PROVISION FOR THE FLESH:

And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. {12} The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. {13} Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. {14} But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof" {Romans 13:11-14}

RUN THE RACE: Deny and discipline yourselves for heavenly prize

Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. {24} And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they <do it> to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. {25} I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: {26} But I keep under my body, and bring <it> into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. {1 Corinthians 9:24-27}

ALL THINGS FOR SAINTS: Looking for eternal unseen things

For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. {16} For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. {17} For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; {18} While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. {2 Corinthians 4:15-18}

DO GOOD TOWARDS OTHERS: Sow and reap for good spiritual life

Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. {Matthew 7:12}

And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. {Luke 6:31}

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. {8} For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. {9} And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. {10} As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. {Galatians 6:7-10}

FIGHT THE CHRISTIAN LIFE: Standing against Satan for all perseverance and supplication for all the saints

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. {11} Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. {12} For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.{13} Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. {14} Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; {15} And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; {16} Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. {17} And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: {18} Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; {Ephesians 6:10-18}

PRESS FOWARDS: Towards the prize of high calling of God in Christ Jesus

Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. {13} Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, {14} I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. {Philippians 3:12-14}

BE NOT MOVED: Fulfill Word of God of mystery manifested to the saints

If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister; {24} Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church: {25} Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; {26} Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: {Colossians 1:23-26}

LIVE IN FAITH AND LOVE WITH HOPE OF SALVATION:

But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. {9} For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, {10} Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. {11} Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do. {1 Thessalonians 5:8-11}

GROW IN FAITH:

We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth; {4} So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure: {5} Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer: {2 Thessalonians 1:3-5}

FIGHT THE GOOD FAITH FIGHT:

Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. {13} I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; {14} That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: {15} Which in his times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; {1 Timothy 6:12-15}

ENDURE FIGHT: For others to obtain the salvation in Christ Jesus with eternal glory

Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. {4} No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. {5} And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully. {6} The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits. {7} Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things. {8}Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: {9} Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. {10} Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. {2 Timothy 2:3-10}

BE RENEWED IN THE HOLY GHOST:

But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, {5} Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; {6} Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; {7} That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. {Titus 3:4-7}

LOVE AND FAITH TOWARDS GOD AND SAINTS:

I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers, {5} Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints; {6} That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus. {7} For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother. {Philemon 1:4-7}

RUN WITH PATIENCE:

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, {2} Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. {3} For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. {4} Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. {Hebrews 12:1-4}

ESTABLISH YOUR HEART:

Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. {9} Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door. {10} Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. {11} Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy. {James 5:8-11}

SPEAK AS ORACLES OF GOD:

If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. {12} Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: {13} But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. {14} If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. {1 Peter 4:11-14}

PARTAKERS OF THE DIVINE NATURE:

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. {5} And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; {6} And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; {7} And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. {8} For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. {2 Peter 1:4-8}

LOVE NOT THE WORLD:

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. {16} For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. {17} And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. {1 John 2:15-17}

LOVE ONE ANOTHER:

I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father. {5} And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. {6} And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it. {7} For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. {2 John 1:4}

WALK IN TRUTH:

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. {5} Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers; {6} Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well: {7} Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. {3 John 1:4-7}

BUILD UP YOURSELVES:

But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, {21} Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. {22} And of some have compassion, making a difference: {23} And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. {24} Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, {Jude 1:20-24}

HOLD FAST:

Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. {11} Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. {12} Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. {Revelation 3:10-12}

RESULTS:

For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. {7} I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: {8} Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. {2 Timothy 4:6-8}
